High reliability organisations in practice – Resources Safety and Health Matters video series

09 November 2021

A new video released by the Commissioner for Resources Safety and Health discusses what the application of high reliability organisation (HRO) theory looks like in practice.

Commissioner for Resources Safety and Health Kate du Preez said the new video in the Resources Safety and Health Matters series explores how HRO theory applies to different types of resources industry organisations—including small, medium and large businesses; the different types of workers—including permanent, contract and temporary workers; and to the industry regulator.

“In our first two videos on HRO theory, we covered the relationship between high reliability and leadership and the process that organisations must follow to begin their journey towards becoming a HRO,” Kate said.

“This third video, which features Susan Johnston from The University of Queensland's Sustainable Minerals Institute and Professor Jolanda Jetten from The University of Queensland's School of Psychology, covers some of the more practical considerations of applying HRO theory in an organisation and across the industry.

“It is an important discussion and rounds out our conversation about HRO theory and its application in the Queensland resources industry. I hope people in the industry have found the discussions interesting and informative.”

The Resources Safety and Health Matters series features in-depth discussions with industry experts about safety and health in the Queensland resources industry.

The first three videos in the series featured Professor Alex Haslam and Professor Jolanda Jetten from The University of Queensland's School of Psychology and Susan Johnston from The University of Queensland's Sustainable Minerals Institute discussing the relationship between high reliability organisations and leadership. Future videos in the series will explore other important topics related to safety and health in the resources industry.
