Forum to explore control of respirable dust at mineral mines and quarries

The control of respirable dust at mineral mines and quarries and the barriers and opportunities for localised controls will be explored at a forum hosted by the Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee on 30 June 2022 at The University of Queensland.

MSHAC respirable crystalline silica forumCommissioner for Resources Safety and Health and chair of the advisory committee Kate du Preez said all occupational hygienists and mineral mine and quarry workers involved in the control of respirable dust were encouraged to attend.

“The forum will provide an opportunity for industry stakeholders to openly collaborate and share learnings for developing, implementing, and maintaining practically effective controls associated with respirable dust,” Kate said.

“It will also serve to increase the understanding of potential barriers and opportunities for localised implementation of controls.

“Since the introduction of QGL02: Guideline for management of respirable dust in Queensland mineral mines and quarries and QGL04: Guideline for respiratory health surveillance of workers in Queensland mineral mines and quarries, there has been momentum in the mineral mining and quarrying industry regarding the reduction of respirable crystalline silica.

“The forum will provide opportunities to review current approaches and encourage industry operators to share their own initiatives for the reduction of respirable crystalline silica.”

The forum is being hosted by the Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee which advises the Minister for Resources on the safety and health of mineral mine and quarry workers.

It will be held from 9 am to 2 pm on Thursday 30 June 2022 at the The University of Queensland Brisbane City campus.
